Prospective Students
Resource for students interested in joining HiX-Lab.
Admissions
If you have already applied for admission, you have fulfilled all admission and financial aid consideration requirements. The faculty cannot provide an individual evaluation of your chances of admission to our department. Specifically, students are not admitted to the department by research project directors; therefore, contacting individual faculty members has no bearing on your chances of admission. I encourage all students with GRE scores of at least 310 and GPAs of 3.5 (or those in the top 10 percent of their graduating class) to apply.
Our research is in the areas of:
Extended Reality (augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality)
Human-Centered Computing (multimodal, wearable, and 3D interfaces)
Applied Machine Learning
Intelligent Immersive Systems
Immersive User Experience
Health Intelligence
If you are not interested in these areas, please get in touch with a faculty member who shares your interests! If our interests coincide, please send us an email. Visit the Faculty Website at CCSE KSU.
Preparation
The most important aspect is that students are motivated, enthusiastic, and interested in learning more about this subject. It is advantageous for students to have prior coursework or experience in machine learning, virtual reality, visualization, or human-computer interaction. Students should have solid programming skills.
General Advice
Whether you are deciding whether to go to grad school or are already there, getting involved in research early is the best plan of action. At worst, you will decide that you do not want to go to grad school. At best, it will help build your resume, make you a better candidate for grad school, pay you, help you to get a job later on, and be very rewarding.
Time Commitments for Research
The minimum commitment period is one year. Undergrad, Master, or Ph.D. Students seeking course credit for research participation are encouraged to apply. Beginning research during your senior year is too late. It would help if you had taken one of my classes before. As they will have sufficient time to learn and contribute to the team, sophomores and juniors are ideal candidates for undergraduate positions.
If you are generally interested but have not taken any of these classes, I will typically assign you a small project to complete in your spare time. This will give you an idea of the scope of this research. Please request directed research/independent study well before the beginning of the semester.
Financial Support for Research:
If you apply for a Ph.D. position, you are automatically considered for full funding. Nonetheless, funds for MS and undergraduate research are frequently restricted to the following:
1. Availability of Research Funding
2. Departmental and College Support
3. Commitment towards research.
